India hotel room crisis causes upsurge in rates
India is facing a severe shortage of higher-quality hotel rooms, a crunch that has spurred hotels to raise rates dramatically, a travel executive said.
The shortage of rooms at hotels that meet Western standards has led many in major cities like Bangalore, the country's high-tech hub, to require three weeks' advance notice of bookings.
Rates in Bangalore, Madras, Goa and Mumbai went up last year by more than 20 percent, said Manav Thadani, who heads the Indian operations of HVS, a hotel consulting firm. In New Delhi, they rose by almost 50 percent. The current average room rent in higher-quality hotels has gone up to $282 in Bangalore and $380 in New Delhi.
``The year 2012 will be under-supplied by up to 10,000 rooms,'' Thadani said.
The shortage of rooms has been caused by a combination of increased business activity and leisure travel within the country and tourists from abroad, Thadani said.
